The Art of Tanning: How Our Cowhides Become Premium Leather

by Paula Schneider 06 Jun 2024

Tanning is a fascinating and intricate process that transforms raw cowhides into the luxurious, durable leather we use in our products. It's a blend of age-old techniques and modern technology, ensuring the highest quality leather. This journey from hide to leather involves numerous steps, each crucial to creating the supple, resilient material we know and love.

Steps of Tanning

Preparation
The journey begins with sourcing the finest raw hides. Once procured, the hides undergo a series of preparation steps, including soaking to clean and soften the material, liming to remove hair and epidermis, and fleshing to eliminate excess flesh and fat.

Tanning Process
The core of the process, tanning, involves treating the hides with tanning agents, such as chromium salts or vegetable tannins. This step stabilizes the collagen fibers, making the leather more durable and resistant to decay. Vegetable tanning, in particular, gives the leather a rich, natural color and enhances its aging process.

Post-Tanning Operations
After tanning, the leather is carefully inspected and sorted. It's then re-tanned, dyed, and fat-liquored to impart the desired properties, such as color uniformity, softness, and flexibility. The leather is then dried and conditioned, ensuring it's ready for the next stage.

Finishing Touches
The finishing phase includes buffing, polishing, and applying surface treatments to achieve the perfect look and feel. This step can involve adding protective coatings or embossing patterns, providing the final product with its distinct character and sheen.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
